To all my blog followers and especially to those that were able to attend the recent Field Trip conference that we held with many other amazing photographers back in February, here is a letter written to you by Justin and Whitney Chamberlain informing you about a new community conference that is perfect for the creative community:

Friends and family, new and old,

Field Trip was truly a dream come true. It has always been my great love to be a catalyst for the kind of growth I was able to witness. When I'm able to facilitate self-realization and foster burgeoning of potential on any scale, let alone for hundreds, I truly feel like I am walking a path that I was born to walk. Field Trip is the culmination of over 5 years of determined labor, the purpose of which was to build a home where brimming potentials could overflow and run all over the place - mixing, pollinating, transforming. I didn't want to dictate anything.  I just wanted to create a space where it could happen. Field Trip is your event. You made it unforgettable. And for that I must both thank you and congratulate you. I might have said this in the tent, but I didn't want to make you listen to me stand there and cry for fifteen minutes.

You, the Field Trip alumni, are now stewards of what will become tradition: yes, Field Trip will happen around the same time next year, and you have all been accepted in perpetuity. You've proven your worth in a way that no application ever could. So in the coming year, run the race like never before, burn yourself out all over again, and then come back to Field Trip and be renewed once more.

I really can't wait.

In the meantime, Justin Lyon and I are teaming up with some close friends to raise up a whole different animal: Camp!

To be clear, CAMP is not an offshoot of Field Trip - in fact, CAMP predates Field Trip. In a lot of ways CAMP inspired Field Trip. Field Trip was born out of a more serious endeavor to revolutionize how photography can be learned and practiced in a visual community - professors, classes, panels, etc. CAMP, on the other hand, is an opportunity more specifically for learning through play. Justin and I will be equipped with our cameras all weekend, roaming and ready to offer tips and any needed SLR basics. If you have friends or acquaintances who are in their startup phase, perhaps needing an entrepreneurial boost and a practical crash course, CAMP is perfect. Between impromptu photo excursions, playful experimentation (with lasers!!!), a series of portraits for everyone, not to mention all that campy goodness: ropes courses, horseback riding - you know, camp stuff. There will be intentional learning aplenty on a wide range of workshops that you can apply to your business or creative ideas, such as: Social Media Analytics, Pitching to Publishers, Everything You Need to Know to Work With Investors, Top Trends in Design, Producing Effective Content through Video, How to Write an Amazing Bio, Legal 101, How to Grow Your Idea from Your Apartment to a Global Operation, Avoiding Creative Burn-Out, etc... plus many more. You can peruse the fine details of all things Camp on - but much of CAMP will be learning through play - experimenting, laughing at results, trying again.

After all, weren't some of the best innovations in history the results of mistakes? Let's make some together. I'm certainly looking forward to it, and we'd love to see you there.

Whitney + Justin

PS: Please don't confuse this with Photo Field Trip.

PPS: Photo Field Trip will be in 2015!

PPPS: We are in the beginning stages of planning a Field Trip to India at the end of October... space is limited at around 15 people, so email Whitney ( FAST to reserve your space or get more info.

PPPPS: If you have any questions at all about CAMP, email Whitney at! Also, email him and let him know if you've already signed up for CAMP, he's got some special information for you!

Last year Justin and Whitney were in attendance at Camp and they were able to document their experience there. Here are some fun images that will give you all an idea of what to expect for the upcoming CAMP conference this year!

It's that time of year again for BLACK FRIDAY sales! I want to give specific shout outs to my two favorite companies that help Amelia Lyon Photography out TREMENDOUSLY!

FOTOFAFA and TOTALLY RAD ACTIONS!! These two amazing companies not only make my business look good, but they both make my life so so so SO much easier!!!

For those that have been following my blog already know how much Justin and I LOVE FOTOFAFA and how much they make our life easier!! We send them the bulk of our images (all digital raw), have them cull the amount down to a reasonable amount for my clients (this is particularly helpful when it comes to weddings and we typically shoot 3,000 plus images, this is what would normally take me hours to do), then we have them "proof" all of our images (meaning, color correction, white balance perfected, some contrast added, etc) so that our clients never receive any raw-un-worked on images. The best part about Fotofafa is that they are FAST and WORTH EVERY PENNY!

FOTOFAFA's Black Friday sale is amazing, they are giving away discounts on ANY credit purchase, as you purchase more credit, the discount increases! They will also choose at random after Black Friday is over a BIG WINNER that will get DOUBLE the amount of credit purchased!!

Here is a recent wedding job we received back from Fotofafa, I was SO pleased with the way that these PROOFED images turned out!!

Before: notice that the images is just missing some "umph"
After: I had them brighten the image, add contrast, and adjust the white balance
fotofafa_beforeandafter_blackfriday_amelialyonphotography_010.jpgBefore: Let's be honest here, our exposure isn't always spot on, we love that we can count of Fotofafa to make the appropriate adjustments to make our proofs look great!
fotofafa_beforeandafter_blackfriday_amelialyonphotography_011.jpgAfter: What a lovely proof! I'm especially happy that they didn't lose the detail in the bride's white dress when brightening this image!
fotofafa_beforeandafter_blackfriday_amelialyonphotography_014.jpgBefore and after side by side: look how "muddy" the out of camera image looks on the left and look how beautiful the proofed image back from Fotofafa looks on the right!
fotofafa_beforeandafter_blackfriday_amelialyonphotography_015.jpgBefore: from the reception
fotofafa_beforeandafter_blackfriday_amelialyonphotography_016.jpgAfter: This image just needed some contrast, looks so much better!
fotofafa_beforeandafter_blackfriday_amelialyonphotography_017.jpgNow onto the ever amazing TOTALLY RAD ACTIONS!!! This company is FANTASTIC because they provide the necessary tools that put the perfect finishing touches on my artistically edited images!

TOTALLY RAD ACTIONS! is running a HUGE Black Friday Sale with 35% off your entire purchase!! Just enter the code: BLACKFRIDAY2013

Once I receive proofs back from Fotofafa I'll go through and choose my personal favorite images that I'll want to either feature on my blog or provide for my clients in their wedding album. These personal favorite images will go through my "artistic edit", blemishes will be removed and I'll apply a particular "recipe" for color toning using RadLab within Adobe Photoshop.

The thing I really like about Totally Rad Actions is that they provide tools for color toning, air brushing, and added effects for various editing styles. These tools aren't' just available for Photoshop, but for LightRoom as well!

As previously mentioned, I prefer to edit within Adobe Photoshop and Radlab is my tool of choice! Here's a screenshot of my RadLab workings with the recipe I used:

Fuzzy Navel: 73%
Get Faded Neutral: 40%
Lux Soft: 30%
Boutwell Magic Glasses: 60%
Oh Snap!: 30%

totallyradactions_radlab_beforeandafter_amelialyonphotography_005.jpgHere's the finished product!
totallyradactions_radlab_beforeandafter_amelialyonphotography_006.jpgI also have a fun black & white recipe I like to use within Radlab (note: I always desaturate my black and whites prior to opening up in RadLab):

Contrast: 40%
Grainstorm: 50%
Detroit BW: intensity 40%
Get Faded Neutral: 40%
Boutwell Magic Glasses: 50%
